How to Use Your Secretary

Stop Doing My Job.

I remember the day all so well. I found myself at the copy machine. Right when I was about to hit the ‘start’ button with my pointer finger, there she was. “What are you doing,” she asked with a puzzled look. I thought it was a trick question. So I responded with a sort of ‘question’ tone, “Making 20 copies of these documents.” She fired back, “But that’s my job.” I stood there not knowing what to do with my finger. Before I knew she was standing between me and the copy machine. Since it was a little awkward, I made my way back to the office. I had had secretaries before, or perhaps not.

Pastors Can Benefit From Being UNDER Leadership

I was viewing a sermon from Apostle Ron Carpenter earlier this month on our need to be UNDER leadership in order to grasp a hold of our inheritance. Of course he was speaking to his congregation. However, I couldn’t help but ask the question if pastors could benefit from being under leadership too.

In the Bible, a high official came to Jesus asking Him to heal his servant. Jesus was going to accompany the official but the official said, “I am a man UNDER authority; send your Word.”

The Bible Miniseries – Pastors, Great Outreach Opportunity!

Some of you maybe aware of the upcoming miniseries entitled, “The Bible” created and produced by Roma Downey of Touch by an Angel and her husband, Mark Burnett.

The Bible is a ten-hour, five-week, miniseries beginning on March 3, 2013 airing ‘prime time’ on the History Channel 8PM – 10PM.

The Bible will air on Sunday nights where viewers will see some of the best-known stories from The Bible:  Noah’s Ark,  the Exodus,  Jesus’ birth and His disciples. The final episode of the miniseries will air on Easter Sunday and will feature the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

Why broadcast on the History Channel?

The History Channel has received a lot of criticism from the Christian community because of their slant on the Bible which is often wrong.

This makes one ask why Roma and Mark decided to showcase their movie on the History Channel. They indicated that..

  1. out of all the networks interviewed , the History Channel vowed to do the ‘best’ promotion and
  2. typically during the Easter season, the History Channel, as well as others, will broadcast shows calling our faith into question like: ‘Who was the Real Jesus,’ ‘Was Jesus married to Mary Magdalene?’ and shows like The DaVinci Code.

They saw it as an opportunity to broadcast the full Gospel, a meta narrative of the complete faithful message for the full month of March.

Pastors – Seize opportunity to be creative

Make the most of this opportunity to reach out to the people in your community who will be watching the series but may not attend church.

I believe Rick Warren said it best when he said, “One way to build a bridge between God’s Word and the issues of our day is to tie a sermon series into some cultural event, something that has already caught the attention of many people.”

He cited an example that when we were going through an economic crisis here in America, he preached a sermon on God’s principles for money management demonstrating HOW the Bible offers wise and practical advice on how to handle your finances.

Warren also took advantage on riding the Passion wave by Mel Gibson in that he preached a series entitled, “How Love Speaks: 7 Words From the Cross”.

Pastors –  Don’t forget Facebook and Twitter

Pastors, Bible teachers, small group leaders who are active with the social networks such as Facebook or Twitter,  you can connect with your congregation, groups, friends  using these platforms as well.  You can speak to one another during commercials or after the show or even the next day.

Pose questions of your own and or pose the questions using the study guidebook made available from Outreach.com .

Do you blog?

Of course, if you have a blog you could use that as a platform as well to dialog with your folks.

Resources are available – some even FREE!

Working with The Bible series team, Outreach has produced The Bible 30 Day Church Experience Kit along with a small group DVD study and personal guidebook so that you can help your church and community experience the Bible in a whole new way.

Outreach, Inc. also hopes pastors will encourage their flock to host their own viewing parties and are providing FREE “Bible Viewing Host Kits” to anyone interested.

Added Bonus

I just heard an interview from Mark and Roma that  the Lifetime Network will also air The Bible Miniseries on Mondays AND there will be a repeat broadcast on Wednesday evening on the History Channel – that’s THREE viewing opportunities available!

Won’t you ride this wave?

Sermon Sharing or Sermon Stealing

copying

Is it ever okay to use other people’s stuff?

Pastor’s opinion vary on topic of shared sermons. Some believe for a pastor to use someone else’s work is plagiarism. They charge them with stealing and being lazy servants.

They further indicate that a pastor’s sermon is his or her own “intellectual property.”

Other pastors believe the message of God is for everyone and if the kingdom is advancing what is the real problem.

Although, I don’t advise pastors to re-preach another pastor’s sermon verbatim, many pastors base their sermons on the work of others.  In fact, on many occasions I have stumbled across web sites where pastors make their sermons available to others.

For example: www.sermoncentral.com, www.pastors.com, www.sermonsharingservice.com and www.sermon.net.

Not only do pastors offer their own sermon scripts, they also offer program suggestions such as music, skit scripts, and even video presentations. Some of these packages are for free while others are for sale for a nominal fee.

Why do some pastors offer these services?

A  simple answer is to share in order to help their colleagues. It’s their part in demonstrating another way in advancing the kingdom. Many pastors do not mind if other pastors use their stuff.  Some even find it to be the ultimate compliment.

Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church was quoted –

“If my bullet fits your gun, then shoot it!” …and if you have a sermon idea that might be helpful to me, feel free to share it! As pastors, we’re all on the same team.

Who are the pastors that use these services?

  • Pastors who respect the writing and teaching of their colleagues.
  • Pastors who acknowledge that this pastor is exceptionally gifted in teaching on a particular subject.  For example: Finance, stewardship, tongues, Revelations, etc.
  • Pastors who may have had a stressful week and were not able to allot adequate time to build a sermon from scratch.
  • Pastors who are in a spiritual rut often benefit from the teaching material of other pastors.
  • Pastors have to prepare sermons for every week of the year, yet there are times we get sick, have marital or family issues and or just stretched because we have overloaded plates.  Gleaning from other pastor’s work can serve as a useful aid in assisting us with putting together a sermon just in time for our Sunday service.

Proceed with caution

Of course using published prepackaged or canned sermons is not to be used as a permanent full-time solution.  Why not? Because we have been called into the ministry, so we need to be confident that on a norm, the Spirit will guides us in our sermon preparation.

Don’t steal

Using someone else’s unpublished material and preaching it verbatim (word for word) while pretending or citing that you came up with the sermon is just downright wrong. This is especially wrong if you tape your services and load it up on the Internet for the public to view.

If we are going to use someone’s material, citing the author’s work is always appropriate.  For example, Rev. Warren cited this example, or Pastor Bob shared this personal story.

All That to Say This

If you elect to use someone else’s material, use published sermons where the author is authorizing the use of his or her material.  If you hear a message where you want to use some of their stuff, be sure you are not preaching their material word for word for this is plagiarism, but be sure to disclose the author.

What are your thoughts about using other pastor’s sermons?

Kick Start The New Year: 21-Day Fast

Why not kick start the New Year in a 21-Day Fast?

Corporate Fast – – click here to listen to audio.

Calling a “FAST” is something you and your entire congregation can participate in together as you seek the will of God.

FASTING is one of the most significant Spiritual Disciplines that leads to greater intimacy with God.

Jentezen Franklin, the Senior Pastor of Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia starts EVERY year off with a 21-Day FAST with his congregation.  Together they seek the will of God for themselves and for their church.

Franklin has written several ‘best selling,’ easy to read books on the subject of Fasting.

Some interesting nuggets from the video by Jentezen Franklin on Fasting include:

  • He never made a major decision without first seeking the Lord in prayer and fasting
  • He was called to ministry during a fast
  • He received his first million dollar donation to his ministry while on a fast
  • The growth of his ministry in terms of increased attendance is a direct result of fasting
  • Increased finances through donations is a direct result of fasting
  • Increased salvations is a direct result of fasting
  • Great testimonies and reports of: healings, family restoration and breakthroughs in people’s marriages also a direct result of fasting.

Franklin’s latest book on the subject of FASTING

Jentezen Franklin’s latest book is called, “The Fasting Edge.”  It takes you through all the facts about fasting including the why’s, how-to’s, when’s, etc.

At a time when church membership and attendance is shrinking, I think we all could use a kick start in the right direction.

If you have never done a ‘Corporate’ Fast, this is the greatest time to start.  Pick up one of Jentezen Franklin’s books on fasting.

You can also look at some of his teaching videos on Youtube and get some ideas on how to approach the subject with your congregation.

May God bless your churches this New Year as we all Seek First the Kingdom of God.

Have you ever started the New Year off with a Corporate Fast? If not, do you think this is something you would consider implementing?
